Turkey Sea Temperatures: Monthly Reference and Swimming Advice
Sea temperature is a separate booking question from sunshine. A warm afternoon can arrive before the water feels comfortable, while autumn water can retain warmth after the air starts cooling. Use the historical reference below to understand that seasonal pattern, then check observations for your destination and dates.
Monthly sea temperatures: a historical reference
This table reproduces three station series from MGM’s 2004 Antalya climate publication, appendix 21, printed page 216. The observation lengths are 33 years for Antalya, 32 for Alanya and 44 for Fethiye. The appendix does not identify their start and end dates. These are unequal historical periods, not current climate normals, a forecast or a comparable ranking of resorts.

What the seasonal pattern can tell you
In all three archival series, the highest monthly value falls in August. October is warmer than May in each series, even though a comparison of air temperatures can suggest similar holiday weather. This supports a useful planning distinction: spring warmth and autumn swimming are different questions.
The size of the difference is historical. It does not predict a particular week now, and small differences between stations should not decide a hotel booking. Exposure, the bathing location and conditions on the day still matter.
Choose around the swimming you actually want
A short dip, an hour of snorkelling and a child playing at the water’s edge are different uses of the sea. There is no single temperature in this table that makes all of them comfortable for everyone. Think about how you normally react to cooler water and whether swimming is essential every day.

Check current water and beach conditions
Before departure, open MGM’s sea-surface temperature service. Check the observation date and location; a value without a timestamp is not useful evidence for today. If the service has no reading for your beach, keep that gap visible instead of treating the nearest distant station as exact.
At the beach, follow local flags, lifeguard instructions and any closure. Temperature does not describe waves, currents or water quality. A sunny photograph and a warm reading cannot establish safe swimming conditions.
